Š Not a fella but a girl DJŠ And more
Deidra Jones is a successful DJ, musician, producer, rapper, writer, and mother. Know to the entertainment world as Spinderella, she is without question one of the pioneers of hip-hop music and a prominent example of great achievements by female artists and entertainers in the music industry.
Fans of hip-hop and pop music know Spinderella as the talented and sexy DJ of the Grammy award winning female trio Salt N¹ Pepa. Hot songs such as ³Push It,² ³Shoop,² ³Whatta Man,² and ³Let¹s Talk about Sex² became anthems for a new generation and catapulted the three members into success and stardom across the glove. Salt N¹ Peppa opened up the male-dominated doors of hip-hop and urban music to women and created an industry standard that every record company tried to replicate.
Spinderella¹s journey to stardom started in Brooklyn, New York where she was born and raised. ³It wasn¹t the best neighborhood, but never once did I feel like I was destined to stay there. I had big dreams and I was motivated by my love for music and performing.² Spin would always dance, make up routines, and sing along to the music that blared from her parents 7th floor window. Her parents eventually enrolled her in a local performing arts workshop where she had the opportunity to learn theatrical technique and develop her performance skills.
Being a part of a world-renowned group gave Spin the chance to use her vocal skills both on and off of the stage. Once described as ³very shy² she admits those days are very much in the past. ³I find now that I have a lot to say, and the media takes advantage of that. At one point I wouldn¹t open my mouth- now they can¹t shut me up!² Spin doesn¹t have a big mouth, but her feistiness and humorous said have made her a delightful TV personality.
She has appeared on ³Late Night with David Letterman² and ³The Tonight Show.² She was also on Nickelodeon¹s hit kid show, ³All That,² as well as the comedy show ³Mad TV² which led to the opportunity to host her own show on MTV ³Lip Service.²
Spinderella¹s past radio experience includes a Friday night mix show syndicated on three of the nation¹s top radio stations, New York¹s Hot 97 (WQHT), Power 106 in Los Angeles, and WPGC in Washington , D.C. Spin also co-hosted the ³Ladies Nite² show with Hot 97¹s Angie Martinez. Her various radio show hosting experiences led to her receiving the rap/hip-hop DJ of the Year Award from the Washing Area Music Association in 1995. Spinderella is currently host, producer, and programmer for the syndicated mix show ³The Spin Cycle.² The show as developed by Spinderella and can currently be heard on Jammin 95.5 every Saturday Night 9-11 pm.
It was Spinderella¹s association with Salt N¹ Peppa that has won her the most acclaim and success in her career. Spin was a co- writer on the hit single ³None of your business, which expanded her role in the group outside the DJ realm, and gave her insight on pursuing more than one talent. While the group has not worked together in a few years, they remain close and speak occasionally about a reunion tour in the future. ³Our solo projects and keeping each of us busy right now. ³We¹re all focusing on our personal quests and enjoying the opportunities we¹re being given.²
Being busy is something Spinderella has always appreciated. ³My life has never been like a nine-to-five because there¹s always something happening.
It gets hectic, but I don¹t mind. I love performing, and at times I act a complete ham.² Acting is another goal that Spin has in sight. ³I took a class to see if I would like it, and I actually loved it,² she enthuses. ³I really like the idea of getting paid to be someone else for a few hours every day. It opens you up as a person.²
Spinderella also continues to move the crowd with her turntable prowess, rocking clubs and high profile (TIVO, ALEX THOMAS, GETTY MUSEUM, NIKE, BET, MOS DEF etc.) events respectively. Don¹t sleep, DJ Spinderella still matters and is still adding bricks to the very foundation and culture that she helped to build.
³There isn¹t anything I can¹t do especially when I put my mind to it and feel it in my heart.² You would think that just being Spinderella is enough for one woman to handle, but this woman wants it all. I¹m blessed,² she explains. ³A day doesn¹t go by that I don¹t appreciate all I have or where I¹ve come from. |
