Neil Fraser, more famously known as Mad Professor started remixing around 4 years after he started his career as a recording engineer. The first job came around 1984, was a remix of the sound track of “Coronation Street” for Warner Bros. The A&R for the project (Bill Drummond) thought that a dubwise flavour would give the soap theme a different appeal.
Soon after this came “It’s a man’s world” by Brilliant. This was one of the first projects for PWL productions.
As the years went on, a diverse group of artists visited or sent their masters to Ariwa Sounds to be treated, doctored, retouched, coloured by Mad Professor.
The most famous is probably the Massive Attack remix album “No Protection”
This album, a remix of the Bristol’s band 1995 album Protection went on to sell several hundred thousand copies, brought dub to a new generation of listeners
Here is a list of some of the more known remixes:
Sade, Beats international/Lindy Layton / Norman Cook, UB 40, Jamariquai, Eusebe, Massive Attack, KLF, The Orb, Depeche Mode from the UK, whilst Rancid, Perry Farrell, Tracy Spencer, The Beasty Boys represented the USA, and Bird, Ayumi Hamasaki, The Boom, Pizzicato five, Havana Exotica, The Boom, Mooming and many more came from Japan.
From Australia we’ve had Deni Hines, New Zealand – Salmonella Dub, from Spain - Firmin, Dusminguet and Boguru, from Austria – Sofa Surfa and Vienna Scientists, from Brazil –Ciudad Negra and Chico Science…and many others from all around the world including Third World, Bounty Killer and Shaggy.
The styles of remix are as varied as the clients.
Whilst Sade was a smooth lovers Rock remix with a dub, the Massive Attack mixes were more heavy dub wise very organic, with lots of electronics.
